Oculo Guard Disposable Anesthesia Aid is used to keep the eyelids fully closed during a general anesthesia, to avoid corneal abrasions. The breathable material of our disposable anesthesia aid protects the eye from particles during procedure and maintain the eyelids moist.

Why is it important?

During anesthesia based medical procedures, a common type of damage to the eye is corneal abrasion. This tear or scratch of the cornea on the eye is very painful for the patient. In most cases, a corneal abrasion occurs because the eye is not closed fully during a procedure and the eye completely dries out. Naturally, about 60% of patients undergoing anesthesia do not close their eyes. In addition, general anesthetics reduce the rate of tear production inside the eye. The dry cornea may stick to the inside of the eyelid and the abrasion occurs when the eye reopens.

During general anesthesia, eyes need protection to avoid corneal injuries either by tape or ointment. Several approaches have been used to ensure that the eyelids remain closed, such as passive closure, hypoallergenic tape, eye patches, saline-soaked pads, and suturing. It is also suggested to tape the eye immediately after induction of anesthesia and keeping the eyes taped till the end of the procedure and considered the use of ointment as optional.

Conventional Methods and the Cons

The most common method used to avoid corneal abrasion is taping since ointment can be irritating and blurred vision can occur for up to eight hours after a procedure. Also, taping is difficult with gloved hands.
